We are developing a whole-school culture of oracy where children are encouraged and supported to speak and listen in a variety of contexts, for a range of purposes and to different audiences.

Our Oracy Curriculum

Oracy is a crucial part of the children’s learning. Oracy skills are taught discretely through Votes4Schools sessions and using Voice 21 techniques. Opportunities to build upon pupils’ oracy skills are planned across the curriculum ensuring progression from EYFS to Year 6 and carefully planned opportunities to learn totalk and to learn through talk.

Children from EYFS to Year 6 create their own “Discussion Guidelines” with their class and refer back to these when holding group or whole class discussions. Pupils also use their “Talk Tactics” to support them with instigating and summarising discussions as well as challenging their peers’ ideas.

The Oracy Framework is used by teachers to plan opportunities for pupils to develop the physical, linguistic, cognitive and social skills that enable them to have successful discussions and become effective communicators.

Additional opportunities for talk are provided for pupils through our “Question of the Week” in the dining hall, our weekly “Talk at Home” prompts and a range of enrichment activities (please see link below).
