School meals

A healthy and balanced diet is important for learning, and we offer a range of nutritious school meals to keep our pupils fuelled for the day.

How to apply for free school meals

If you are not sure whether you have the right to free school meals, please contact us on 0113 2709503, or call into the school office, where you can complete a FSM application which we will then send on to LCC for you.

A request has to be made before the Council can provide free school meals.  Normally, the parent or guardian of the child makes the request.

Who is eligible for free school meals

We believe that school meals represent the best option in terms of contributing to a healthy diet.  This is by comparison to other sources of food available to children for their midday meal such as a packed lunch. If your child attends school full time and you are claiming Child Benefit for them you may be able to apply for free school meals.

You can apply for free school meals up to two months before your child starts school.  Please do not apply more than two months before your child starts school or you will have to reapply later.

Free school meals are a statutory benefit.  This means if you are receiving one of the following, your child will have the right to a free school meal.

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit and your annual income is below £16,190 (as worked out by HM Revenue & Customs).  But you are not entitled to free school meals if you also receive Working Tax Credit (except if it is Working Tax Credit for a 4week ‘run on’ period only).
  • Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Pupils are also entitled to claim free school meals in their own right if they are in receipt of:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance
How to pay

Funds can be added via ParentPay, our online payment platform. The cost of a school lunch is £2.60 per child. To avoid payment delays, we recommend using the standard card payment method rather than the one-click bank transfer, which can take up to 10 days to process. Follow these steps to top up your child’s balance:

1. Log in to ParentPay.

2. Select your child’s name and click ‘Pay for Meals’.

3. Enter the amount and add to your basket.

4. Click the trolley icon and proceed to checkout.

5. Choose ‘Other Payment Method’ and enter your card details.

6. Click ‘Review Payment’ and then ‘Pay Now’.

7. Check your email for confirmation from platform@parentpay.com.

Bringing a packed lunch

Pupils are welcome to bring a packed lunch from home. We encourage healthy choices, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and wholegrain foods, to support their learning and wellbeing throughout the day. Please do not send fizzy drinks or glass bottles / containers.

Being aware of allergies

If your child has any dietary requirements or allergies, please inform the school so we can make suitable arrangements. Please be aware of allergies of other pupils and follow and guidance you get from school about what food can be brought in from home.
